Starting a candle business is one of the most accessible and rewarding creative businesses today. However, many beginners focus only on wax and fragrance oils while overlooking the tools that make candle production easier, faster, and more consistent.
In this guide, we’ll cover all the essential tools needed to start a candle business, separating the tools that every candle maker needs from those that are specific to jar candles and mold candles.
Essential Candle Making Tools Every Beginner Needs
These tools are considered the foundation of any candle-making setup, regardless of the type of candles you plan to make.
Digital Scale
A digital scale is arguably the most important tool in candle making. Accurate measurements are essential when calculating:
- Wax quantities
- Fragrance load percentages
- Dye amounts
- Batch consistency
Even small measurement errors can affect scent throw, burn performance, and candle appearance.
Pouring Pitcher
A pouring pitcher is used to melt wax safely and pour it into jars or molds without creating spills. If you don’t have a wax melter, this tool is ideal to melt wax using the double-boiler method.
Thermometer
A thermometer is a candle maker’s best friend. Every wax has a recommended melting point, and pouring temperature, and it is very important to get those right, as it can make or break your candle.
A thermometer helps you:
- Prevent overheating
- Reduce frosting in soy-based candles
- Improve fragrance performance
- Achieve smoother tops
Stirring Rod
Proper mixing ensures fragrance oils and dyes distribute evenly throughout the wax. A metal stirring rod is durable, easy to clean, and designed for repeated candle-making sessions.
If you don’t want to get a stirring rod, you can use any stick that you have at home, or simply use the thermometer to stir. I would personally get a rod, though, as it is a better option for the long term.
Silicone Measuring Cup
This tool is perfect for measuring fragrance oils, liquid dyes, and additives before mixing them into your wax.
If you don’t want to get a silicon measuring cup, you can use any cardboard cup, but you will find yourself constantly buying those, and it won’t be financially sustainable.
Wick Holders
Keeping your wick centered is critical for proper burning, and this applies to both jar and mold candles. If your wick is not centered, your candle will burn unevenly, resulting in a poor product. You can use steel or wood wick holders. This goes back to your preference, but I found that the steel ones need constant cleaning and care, whereas the wood ones are disposable and more convenient.

If you’re planning to make jar candles, then you will need the tools necessary for this application.
Candle Jars
This is a given. You will need candle jars, whether they are made from glass, porcelain, gypsum, or any material that is candle-safe. The choice of jar you use should be in harmony with the branding that you have.
Jar Wax
Not every wax is the same, and jar waxes tend to be good at adhesion, which is basically how well they can stick to the jar, and how well they reset after the wax dries after burning the candle.
Waxes like coconut, soy, paraffin, and rapeseed are a go-to option for most candle makers.
Prewaxed and Pretabbed wicks
When selecting wicks for your jars, you need to make sure they are prewaxed and pretabbed to avoid waxing and tabbing them yourself. They usually come in different shapes and forms, just make sure you select the correct wick for your jar diameter.
Wick Stickers
Double-sided stickers secure the wick to the bottom of the jar before pouring wax.
You can use those, or a hot glue gun, to stick your wicks to the jar. I personally found that the stickers are best for glass, and the glue gun is best for jars made from Jesmonite, concrete, gypsum, or anything that needs polishing, basically.
Tools Needed for Mold Candles
Decorative mold candles have become increasingly popular because they allow makers to create unique designs that stand out in the market. There are specific tools needed to make these candles.
Candle Molds
Candle molds determine the final shape of your candle. You can choose options from acrylic or silicone molds. Just make sure that the mold quality is good enough to help with unmolding and prevent any leakage.
Mold Wax
Just like we have waxes made for jars, we have waxes made for molds. These waxes tend to separate from the mold, as they have a higher melt point, and enjoy a contraction property when the wax turns from liquid to solid.
Candle Wick Needle
A wick needle helps thread wicks through silicone molds before pouring wax. Without it, preparing molds becomes significantly more difficult.
Optional Tools for Your Candle Business
The above-mentioned items are simply the required tools to get you started, but you can get some more things that you might need depending on your use-case.

That’s basically how I would start, and I wouldn’t go overboard on my spending. Just get enough supplies to help me make roughly 20 candles, and start from there. Once the business grows, so will your expenditure.
